Heritage Talks
16/03/2023
Our team is pleased to offer free tickets to a new talks programme launching at this venue this spring. The Our Shared Heritage Talks will explore the late Victorian period (when our venue was built) from different and diverse perspectives and celebrating the part that Black, Arab and Asian people and cultures have played in London’s history.
In the first talk on 16th March, Professor Hakim Adi (author of African and Caribbean people in Britain) explores the story of African and Caribbean people in Britain 1878 – 1919, outlining significant world events during this period and the connected issues followed by a Q&A with A.S. Francis. The series continues in April with historian S.I Martin (4th April) and Arabist and cultural expert Diana Darke (20th April).
Our team is offering free tickets to relevant college and university courses. Use the code STUDENT to book a free student ticket to any of these talks. Or please get in touch if you would like to bring a large group.

Porbjörg Daphne Hall (Iceland University of the Arts) "I would never have time to do this if not for the pandemic": The Experiences and Responses of Musicians in Iceland to COVID-19
21/03/2023
Life during the pandemic was different in Iceland than in many other countries: there were no lockdowns and schools mostly remained open. Concerts and gatherings were nonetheless severely restricted, leaving musicians with little to do. My talk addresses musicians experienced this time, how they felt, and what they did during the pandemic as well as once restrictions were lifted. What were the challenges? Were there any opportunities? And how did circumstances specific to Iceland, where musicians commonly work in different fields and on multiple projects, affect the answers to these questions.
Dr Porbjörg Daphne Hall is Associate Professor of Musicology at the Iceland University of the Arts in Reykjavik. Her research has focused on Icelandic music, through the lens of national identity and place. She co-edited Sounds Icelandic (2017) and has published and presented papers internationally on both popular music and jazz in Iceland. Currently, she is researching socially engaged and participatory music projects and the music scene in Reykjavik. 12pm - 1 pm

Celebrating Alkan's Esquisses
21/03/2023
In homage to the nineteenth-century French-Jewish composer Charles Valentin Alkan (1813-1888), this event takes as a starting point his Esquisses for piano, Op. 63. In 2020 the UK Alkan Society published a volume of contemporary responses to these engaging miniatures, including contributions from experimental composers John White, Hugh Shrapnel, and Middlesex staff members Brian Inglis and Alan Mills. Students following the BA Music Performance/Composition pathway, joined by guest pianist Richard Shaw (Royal Academy of Music), will play a selection of the Esquisses, old and new, publicly launching the new volume and celebrating Alkan's continuing legacy.
Pianist Richard Shaw is staff accompanist at the Royal Academy of Music and is currently writing a biography of the distinguished Russian mezzo soprano, Maria Karinskaya (1882-1942), following his discovery of an unknown 400-page Russian manuscript based on her lost memoirs. His album, Malcolm Arnold: Songs and Arias, is published by Novello & Co/Music Sales. Recent CDs for the Deux-Elles label include music by Phillipe Gaubert, with Kathryn Thomas (flute), the chamber works and piano solos of Sir Harrison Birtwistle, 'Piper's Dream' (with Ensemble Lumière) featuring the piano solos and chamber works of Cecilia McDowall, and 'Fauré and his circle'. At the time Richard studied piano, his teacher, Ronald Smith, was immersed in pioneering recordings of Alkan's works for the BBC, EMI and others. Moved and excited by this unknown music Richard then began an extensive search for documentary materials relating to Alkan. He is currently writing a biography of Ronald Smith, who would have been 100 this year. 5.30pm - 6.30pm
